![]() Your report brings to mind the many conflicts occurring around the world (“ Threat at home: ASIO”, October 18). ![]() Time for our government to advocate for a fair and peaceful settlement of the 75-year conflict in the Middle East. That said, while the denials are worthless, we know the balance of terror remains with the government of Israel as the Israeli government continues with its collective punishment through the destruction of homes, and cutting off food, water and electricity to all Palestinians in Gaza. Sadly, both denials lack any credibility. Vincent Sicari, Haberfieldīoth the Israeli government and Hamas have denied responsibility for the bombing of the Hospital in Gaza. I appeal to our prime minister to do all he can to urge US President Joe Biden to contain the risk of escalation and reduce the suffering. As a good friend to both we should seek to influence them towards a peaceful resolution of the conflict. We have strong friendships with the USA and Israel. As Australians, we need to do everything we possibly can to promote peace now. Should other states become engaged militarily a major conflagration with dire results for the world could result. We could be heading to a disaster of incalculable proportions. It is clear that the war risks spiralling out of control if Israel does not moderate the military actions it is currently engaged in (“ Protests erupt through Middle East after explosion kills hundreds at Gaza hospital”,, October 18). Darryl Kite, Yarralumla (ACT) World needs peaceful solution in Middle East Meanwhile, it ignored the smug satisfaction of some who voted No, comfortable that their privilege and access to facilities will not be shared by many of our Indigenous brethren. The criticism dismisses the empathy and sense of justice that motivated many who voted Yes. How pathetically ironic is the criticism of voters in teal seats who supported the Voice (Letters, October 16). But then maybe some people just make their own luck, I guess. It’s very easy to be an agent in your own life and aspire to improve yourself when you’re male, of a certain race, born into a family supported by society, with access to timely medical care and educational opportunities and without the police eyeing you when you walk down the street. So all that’s needed to increase one’s life expectancy, health outcomes, educational opportunities, family stability and chance of staying on the right side of the law is, according to your correspondent, “agency and aspiration”( Letters, October 18). Truth-telling must start right there, with legislation that holds liars to account and allows them to be called out in real time. When blatant lies are allowed in political advertising, there was no way to counter them. Readers ask why Albanese could not counter the No arguments ( Letters, October 18). I’d wager there was a colossal number of people, possibly in the order of the total Yes vote, who voted No with a heavy heart. However, it erred very badly with its my-way-or-the-highway approach. This is what the government had at its disposal at the outset. Australia is not pure but, when it comes to fair-mindedness, it approaches unanimity. In the wash-up, it is sad to see some people bagging their country and being given media assistance to do so. The constitution is not hard to change the Liberal Party just need to stop playing gutter politics. It seems to me that since the formation of the Liberal Party in 1944, they have chosen to block all referendums put up by the ALP. The ALP was only successful in one referendum, which regarded social services, in 1946 under prime minister Ben Chifley. Of 44 referendums held, just eight succeeded. With every utterance on this subject, he brings shame on our nation. Here he is in parliament accusing the prime minister of dividing the nation when it was his Coalition partners and him, as the leader of the Coalition, who chose to politicise the proposal, not offer bipartisan support and promote a No vote with misinformation and scare tactics. Chris Moe, Bensvilleĭutton’s hypocrisy is breathtaking. The tragedy is the people who really got hurt are our Indigenous sisters and brothers. This is gutter politics – a street fight. Peter Dutton said in question time concerning the cost of the referendum: “You will find out what will it cost when you are in opposition”. It is now clear the Coalition’s primary reason for opposition to the referendum was to politically damage the government (“ No Labor review as Libs go for the jugular”, October 18).
